The world is changing. Once, Witch Song controlled everything from the winds to the shifting of the seasons--but not anymore. All the Witches are gone, taken captive by a traitor. All but Brusenna. As the echo of their songs fade, the traitor grows stronger. Now she is coming for Brusenna. Her guardian has sworn to protect her, but even he can't stop the Dark Witch. Somehow, Brusenna has to succeed where every other Witch has failed. Find the traitor. Fight her. Defeat her. Because if Brusenna doesn't, there won't be anything left to save.

They call us Witches. But long before that, the creators named us Keepers. It's what we are. Keepers of the Four Sisters - Earth, plants, water and sunlight. And as a Keeper, you can't deny that all are floundering. If we don't act now, it'll be too late.
Wardof charged them, water erupting around him. He splashed next to the boat, heaved himself up and lunged for the Captain with his knife, but he stopped cold when he saw a pistol trained on his face. "You don't have any manpower or the weapons to make any threats, sea slime. Witches are the Keepers of the sea and we do them reverence." He sniffed the air above Wardof in repugnance. "Now you get your stinking Hunter carcass away from my boat before I make you shark bait."
Pogg hadn't moved from his crouch. His eyes shifted her way. "Senna takes bath. Smells like fish. Witches not likes that.
Joshen strode to the window and looked at the sunshine. Without turning, he said, "I can promise you this - I'll never willingly leave you, Senna." "None of them willingly leave", she said. "But they leave all the same."

Here’s the short version: if you haven’t picked up this book yet, you should do it ASAP

And now, the long version: Witch Song is simply beautiful. In this riveting debut novel about witches, magic, love, good and evil, Amber Argyle combines superb writing and incredible world-building and character development with a storyline that’s both fast-paced and smooth at the same time.  It’s a page-turner. One that you will definitely want to re-read once you’re done. It’s one of those books that really touch your heart and fuel your imagination. It’s very rare to find a novel  - especially a debut – that has this many things going for it. Enchanting atmosphere, well-drawn characters, beautiful settings, and most importantly, really good, gripping plot line – all this makes Witch Song a very promising beginning to a new exciting YA fantasy series.

Away from the village, in the midst of a deep forest, is a house where two witches – a mother and a daughter – lead a quite existence. They live far away from other people because they’re not welcome in the village. The villagers have no respect for witches, they fear and hate what they don’t understand – the witches’ magic and their way of life. The only time when Brusenna and her mother go to the village is when they run out of food and the hunger forces them to visit the local market. Other than that the two witches prefer to stay in their house, with the pathway leading to it magically hidden by the witch song.

Brusenna is a young and powerful witch, who doesn’t yet realize her full potential. Her mother, intent on keeping her daughter safe, decided to move away from Haven (an Island where all the witches live and practice magic). Brusenna hasn’t been taught much about magic – she knows how to sing (singing equals weaving a spell), but the songs she’s been taught are only the basic and most essential ones. She hardly knows anything about witches and their history, either. To protect her, her mother kept every witch-related thing a secret. But destiny has a way of catching up with us. Brusenna’s ignorance of magic and the witch world turns out to be more dangerous than her mother ever thought it would be. When all the other witches (including her mother) are captured by the evil Dark Witch, Brusenna is the only one left. She’s the last witch, the only person in the whole world that is powerful enough to face her mother’s captor and save the world from destruction. The only problem is, she knows next to nothing about magic and there’s no one left to teach her.

Witch Song is a charming, compelling book about growing up, and discovering yourself and your true purpose in life. It’s a vibrant story, full of action and adventure, with a sprinkle of love and a whole lot of sparkling magic. And it’s not just any magic, it’s my favorite kind of magic. The sweet, beautiful, breath-taking magic, with the spells sang to life rather than recited from a book. There are no magic wands in the Witch Song, no huge toms of magic, no brooms, crooked noses and no pointy hats. In the world created by Mrs. Argyle, the witches are simply women who can weave spells with the power of their voice. They sing and the world listens. It’s fascinating! I really loved the concept of singing the spells – it reminded me of another favorite YA fantasy of mine – the Witchlanders by Lena Coakley. If someone asked me which of these two books I liked better, I think I wouldn’t be able to choose, because these are two totally different flavors of fantasy. Witch Song is definitely more girly, with the lead protagonist being a vulnerable, fragile, lovely girl and the romance thing going on in the background. I loved Witchlanders for the world building, fantastic characters and unique, romance-free plot line, but I also loved Witch Song for being so absolutely mesmerizing and heart-warming. And as much as I’m sick of the silly love stories in the recent Young Adult books, the romance part of Witch Song didn’t bother me at all. It was well balanced and didn’t appear to be forced or out of place. The chemistry between Brusenna and Joshen was quite electrifying and I admit, I got goose-bumps once or twice while reading about them.  Most importantly, it wasn’t overdone or rushed, it actually looked quite believable and natural. I really liked that Senna didn’t lose her head over Joshen. Sure, she loved him and they were very adorable together, but at the same time she stayed focused on her task. She also knew that sometimes you need to sacrifice your own happiness for a greater good – that’s definitely one of her best qualities.

Amber Argyle created a fascinating and detailed world. Quite a big part of the story takes place out in the ocean, while the characters are traveling from one destination to another. The setting is beautiful and fantastically described. All the places and characters are vivid and realistic, and thanks to Argyle’s evocative language it’s easy to imagine them. My favorite side-kick character was Pogg – a weird creature, with a cute and funny way of speaking that made it impossible not to love him.

This book is a great fantasy read. If you’re looking for a book packed with badass action, where the main character spends most of the time covered in his or his opponent’s blood then this might not be the book for you. But, if you want a more thoughtful look at magic, a book that is filled with adventures yet manages to be very sweet and charming at the same time, then this is definitely a book you’ll enjoy. I know that I did!

Best friends share everything with each other. Or do they? Seventeen-year-old Ashlyn Frances Lanski is tired of her boring, single life. Spending time with her best friend Tatiana, dreaming about kissing Tatiana's twin brother Fin, and swimming competitively are her only sanctuary. The girls plan to leave their drab lakeside town far behind for college. But when Tatchi fails to return home after a family emergency, and no one knows where the family has gone, Ash chooses to do something drastic to find them.

Ashlyn is about to discover what she’d thought to be true her whole life, wasn’t, and the truth, too fantastical to imagine. Secrets lurk beneath the deep blue waters of Lake Tahoe, secrets that will change Ashlyn's life forever.

Her whole life flashed before me. The kiss I desired to give her would change everything - her dreams, her life with her family, her future.. Innocent and trusting, she closed her eyes and tilted her head upward in anticipation anyway.
The world slowed down as his words fluttered into my ears and the door flew open at the same time. Lucy huffed and perched her hands dramatically on her hips.

“She’s on the phone!” she barked down the hall

I blinked at my sister and clenched the phone, my hand shaking. The little brat. I made a “knock-it-off” motion by slicing my finger across my throat and fervently pointed for her to leave.
His eyes, deep and coo, sucked me into a watery vortex I wanted to sick into and look at forever. My mind and muscles went numb, like the time I secretly drank Uncle Roger’s beer in the cellar on a bet at the annual family reunion six years ago.

Like an oversized seal, he came out of the water and dragged a giant fin where his legs should have been.

Deliciously sweet and dangerously seductive, Everblue by Brenda Pandos is an absolutely and indisputably fantabulous beginning to a new awesome Young Adult series that will win you over in a blink of an eye! This book is the definition of AWESOME. It’s lively, intriguing, beautiful, and it has everything a good YA book should have. Brenda Pandos did it! With her exquisite storytelling she crafted an outstanding fairy tale that will enchant you. There is no escaping it, prepare to fall in love!

Aaaah, mermaids! Stunningly beautiful creatures capable of stealing your heart and enchanting your soul with a single kiss. Alluring, charming, innocent and pure-hearted, mermaids can also be quite unpredictable and dangerous. Ashlyn Lanski, our lovely red-head protagonist, is about to get sucked into a story straight from a fairy-tale book. There’s a whole fantastic world hidden underneath the Tahoe Lake area where Ashlyn lives. A magical, mesmerizing world, filled with gorgeous mystical creatures she never thought existed. The merfolk are leading a peaceful and undisturbed existence in the underground waters all around the world. They’re forbidden to mingle with humans, as it’s considered to be dangerous. They rarely visit the surface and when they do, it’s mostly to acquire a special item requested by one of the elders. Other than that, merwomen and mermen are not allowed to leave their wonderful underground kingdom of Natatoria. To ensure that no one breaks the rule, the gates to their world are guarded and monitored at all times. The Lake Tahoe’s gate to Natatoria is protected by Tatiana’s and Finley’s father, an important member of the mer council. Thanks to that they’re one of the very few mer people who get to live on the land.

Although being fiends with humans is strictly forbidden, Tatiana’s best friend is no one else but Ash. These two are very tight and they even made plans to go to a college together. For Tatchi this would mean willingly giving up her fin and becoming a human. She made up her mind, she doesn’t want to be “owned” by the mer king, she craves freedom and control over her own life.  Most of all, she doesn’t want to get anywhere near Natatoria, because of the king’s son, Azor, who recently has become a little bit too “friendly”.  Her plans all come tumbling down when, together with her bother and parents, she is summoned by the king to a meeting in Natatoria. With their father sent away on a dangerous assignment, the siblings are forced to stay in the mer kingdom and follow the king’s orders. Everything gets even more complicated when Fin saves Ashlyn’s life by performing mouth-to-mouth. This seemingly innocent and good-wiled action will change their lives forever

Sweetly addictive and beautifully written, Everblue stole my heart! I have no idea how in the world am I going to endure the long wait for the sequel. This is one of the most brilliant gems in the YA treasure box, easily the best mermaid book I have ever read. Brenda is a phenomenal storyteller. It was actually the first of Brenda’s many books that I had the pleasure of reading, but will surely not be the last. I am totally in love with Brenda’s writing style.

She did a fantastic thing in Everblue – she told the story from two different POVs –both being first-person’s narratives. What an ingenious move that was! I so enjoyed seeing the world through Ashlyn’s and Finley’s eyes, it made it much easier to follow the plot and connect with them. Everblue has so much depth! The story is action packed and wonderfully detailed, every word of it is full of flavor. Brenda describes  people and places in a way that feels almost as if you’re looking at a picture – she paints with words! Her characters are just fabulous – so lively, loveable and three-dimensional.

The world building is simply amazing. I really liked how well thought-out it was. I love the idea of mermaids being promised to mermen with a single kiss – it’s fascinating and extremely sexy! The bond between the promised mer people is strong, unbreakable and magical. I found it very mesmerizing to read about it!

Brenda Pandos wrote a charming, extremely enjoyable romantic story filled with magic and beauty. Full of mystery, delightful settings and sparkling dialogue, it’s a must read for every mermaid fan out there!

Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire... fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops.

Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast -- as the entrees.

The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?

The unicorn stood between the dumpsters. At first she thought she was mistaken. Unicorns didn't exist, which made his presence here unlikely at best. But there was no chance that he was simply an ordinary white horse (which, she quickly realized, would have been an odd addition to the parking lot too). Despite the thick shadows by the dumpsters, he sparkled like a horse-shaped disco ball. His traditional spiral horn beamed like a toy light saber.

Pearl burst out laughing. "Seriously? A unicorn? Please."
“A brush with extinction does not excuse unladylike behaviour. You weren’t raised in a barn.
Beathany beamed at her, and the other three girls looked as pleased as cats with milk. She met their smiles with her own until a terrible thought occurred to her: Oh, crap. I have friends.
"You messed up my life in a high-handed, daddy-knows-best, alpha-male way and reshaped me to suit your own ideals without any regard for my culture or family background, not to mention my personal wants and needs - and that's if I'm being charitable. If I'm not being charitable..." Her lips touched his ear as she breathed the words. "No matter how you rationalize it or how wide you open those shining eyes of yours, you treated me like a lab rat. Worse, an expendable lab rat."

      One word: WOW.
Never before have I read a vampire book that left me totally speechless.  Drink, Slay, Love by Sarah Beth Durst is, hands down, one of the best (if not THE best) vampire novel I have ever read. And the best part is I wasn’t at all expecting it! It was one of the first five books I received from the wonderful people at Simon & Schuster Canada, and – I’m sorry to admit that – one that I was least excited for. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even know I was getting it – it came as a total surprise!  I picked it up thinking “yet another vampire novel to get through” and before I knew it, I was completely engrossed in the story and absolutely in love with Sarah Beth Durst’s unique take on the vampire world! I enjoyed reading Twilight series with its friendly (&sparkly) squirrel-sucking vampires (don’t judge me, you know you liked it, too, at one point!), I really loved CV Hunt’s dark Curt Cobain look-a-like bloodsucker, I devoured Anne Rice’s gorgeous Vampire Chronicles, but this… This was beyond awesome. In Drink, Slay, Love, Durst reached a whole new level of fabulous. I could happily sit down and read it all over again. And who knows, I might just do that!

Pearl is a teenage vampire. She’s also stunningly beautiful and undeniably evil. Being a typical, heartless (figuratively speaking) creature of the night, Pearl not only has no reflection and no heartbeat, but also no conscience (or any other human feelings) whatsoever. Just like others of her kind, she’s a nightwalker – even minimal exposure to the sun could prove fatal for her. Same goes for playing with fire – apparently vampires are also highly flammable. Despite all that, Pearl is perfectly content with her “life”. Sure, she might not be very fond of some of her family members and yes, she could use a little bit more freedom, but she has her drop-dead handsome vampire boyfriend (Jadrien) and she enjoys “snacking” on the young Dairy Hut worker. Smart, strong and irresistibly gorgeous, she makes a perfect predator. What else could she possibly want?

Pearl’s “perfect life” gets turned upside down when she crosses paths with… a unicorn! Unfortunately for our blood-sucking friend, this unicorn is not here to happily bounce around and poop rainbows. In fact, mr-sparkly-and-pointy stabs our heroine straight through her heart with his horn. And, believe it or not, that’s just the beginning of her problems. Next thing she knows, the sun doesn’t hurt her anymore, she can see her own reflection and – wait for it – she starts feeling bad for her prey! And all that happens at the worst time imaginable – just when the vampire King of New England is about to come to town for The Fealty Ceremony. Not to mention that this once-in-a-century event is going to be hosted by her family, and she’s the one responsible for providing, uhm, let’s call it “refreshments”.  Before she knows it, she’s attending the local high school and making human friends. What will she do when the time comes to serve up her new friends as party snacks? What’s a vampire with a freshly awakened conscience to do?

Vampires and unicorns – doesn’t it sound freaking amazing? Well, it totally is! Actually, it’s even more amazing that you guys can imagine. Not only is the story line fresh, original, deliciously quirky and completely engrossing, but there’s literally nothing in this book that I would change. Not a single character that I wouldn’t like, not a single boring passage, no loose ends, no what-the-hell-is-going-on moments. Non. Zero. Null. The plot is nicely thought-out and skillfully executed. All the missing puzzles are graciously falling into the right places as we read. The unicorn mystery didn’t really surprise me – I actually figured it out quite fast – but the way Sarah Beth Durst unraveled the whole thing was very exciting, rather than get-over-with-it-already-you’re-annoying-me kind of thing. The chemistry between all the characters was top-notch. Especially between Pearly and Evan. Would someone try to tell me a couple of weeks ago that there will come a day when I will be getting excited over a vampire-unicorn romance, I would probably give you my best hell-no look and told you to get lost. But then Durst came along with her fan-freaking-tastic novel and next thing I know I’m reading about it with a heart beating ridiculously fast in my chest. It was really good. And she didn’t overdo it either, which I really appreciate! There’s barely any actual romance at all, I was mostly getting excited for what might happen in the next books (because there are going to be next books, right? RIGHT?!).

Pearly is a wonderful heroine. She’s just plain gorgeous. I loved her snarkiness and dark sense of humor. She was going through a lot, her whole life was getting messed-up and yet she wasn’t whining or feeling sorry for herself. She was tough. She’d much rather find the one responsible for all her problems and kick his/her ass, than sit around crying and hoping for a change of fate. She’s a doer, she fights for herself. I really liked that about her.

Evan is hot, but he’s also all kinds of awesome and sweet. And on top of everything else, he’s also quite mysterious and charming. Plus he has a not-so-dark secret and adorable hero-complex. I love Evan. Period.

There are, of course, many other fantastic characters in Drink, Slay, Love. Some are more essential to the plot than others, but each and every single one of them brings something unique to the story. There’s not a character that I would say was unnecessary or a waste of ink. Take the nerdy duo –Zeke and Matt. They’re like ripped straight from the Big Bang Theory! I could read this book again just for their awesomely geeky conversations! Sarah Beth Durst really knows how to make her characters vivid, realistic and three-dimensional. I’m so in love with all of them!

I’d recommend this book to everyone, regardless of your usual reading preferences. I am pretty confident that once you start reading, you won’t be able to put it down.

When alchemist Sydney is ordered into hiding to protect the life of Moroi princess Jill Dragomir, the last place she expects to be sent is a human private school in Palm Springs, California. But at their new school, the drama is only just beginning.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Bloodlines explores all the friendship, romance, battles and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive - this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone's out for blood.
(goodreads.com)

I couldn’t breathe.
There was a hand covering my mouth and another shaking my shoulder, startling me out of a heavy sleep. A thousand frantic thoughts dashed through my mind in the space of a single heart-beat. It was happening. My worst nightmare was coming true.
They’re here! They’ve come for me!
Evidence? How could I explain that it wasn’t evidence that had driven me to help Rose so much as a feeling in my gut that she was telling the truth? But that was something I knew they’d never understand. All of us were trained to believe the worst of her kind. Telling them that I had seen truth and honesty in her wouldn’t help my cause here. Telling them that I’d been black-mailed into helping her by another vampire was an even worse explanation. There was only one argument that the Alchemists might possibly be able to comprehend.

“No,” said Keith swiftly, turning that steely blue gaze back on me. “There is no way she can come, no way I’m trusting some twisted vamp lover
to screw this up for all of us. We’re taking her sister.”

Let me start my review with a quote that perfectly illustrates how I felt about the first 350 pages of this book.
You see, I suffered from a condition in which bitchiness was a side effect at the mere mention of bullshit. “Sure. Just excuse me while I think of a polite way to say hell no.” - Watched by Sharde Richardson
I have been pining for this book ever since I first heard about it. Like many other YA fans out there, I was super excited for it and, although I didn’t have a chance to read Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series yet, I heard so many awesome things about her previous works that I knew I HAD TO read her newest release and find out what everyone was raving about. I so wanted to love this book! The premise was intriguing and promising, the characters well developed and Richelle’s writing style is absolutely fantastic – I fell in love with it right from the get-go. How could you possibly go wrong with that? Well, apparently you can! While I liked the setting, the pace was totally off. It was insanely slow. The narrative voice was superb: realistic, smooth and engaging, but where was the action? Why was the plot so sillyWhy-oh-why was the story line focused entirely on dating-related issues, making it look more like some cheap soap opera (Days of our Lives? The Bald and The Beautiful?) rather than a badass vampire novel I expected. I’m really sorry to say that, but honestly, this book was a disappointment

Those of you who have read the Vampire Academy series surely remember Sydney, the alchemist that broke the rules to help Rose Hathaway in her quest to save Dimitri. Sydney is back and so are few other VA characters that you might recognize – Eddie, Jill, Adrian… even Rose makes an appearance at the beginning of the book, although she doesn’t really have any major role to play in the story.  Jill Dragomir’s life is in danger. Her sister – Lisa Dragomir – has been elected the new Moroi Queen but not everyone is happy about it. There’s been a lot of protests and dissidence. Not being able to get past Lisa’s security, the attackers targeted Jill. Unfortunately Lisa’s rule is dependent on there being at least one other person in her royal family. Jill, being her only relative, is an easy target. She needs to be sent away somewhere safe until the new law is passed and the “one-extra-member-in-the-royal-family” rule doesn’t apply anymore. Moroi ask the alchemists for help and Sydney gets assigned to protecting Jill. They’re sent to Palm Springs, where together with Eddie, they will be posing as high school students, doing their best to remain undiscovered. “But instead of finding safety at Amberwood Prep, Sydney discovers the drama is only just beginning.”

Sounds really great, right? In truth, the whole story described above takes place on the first 10 and the last 50 pages of this book, and you could easily skip the rest.  Since the moment Sydney, Jill and Eddie arrive in California all they do is try to figure out who should date who and why. Jill acts like a spoiled bratWhy does she even HAVE TO have a boyfriend? Is it really so hard to lay low for 3 months and try not to attract attention to herself? Is it a Moroi thing? Can’t she really control her hormones for the few weeks it takes to pass the new law? OH-my-gosh, seriously?

Sydney was a little bit better and I actually felt sorry for her having to babysit the Moroi kids. She was doing her best to keep everyone safe and happy, which proved to be harder than she anticipated, especially with Keith watching her every move and waiting for her to make a mistake. Adrian, on the other hand, was just plain annoying. He was constantly going out of his way to cause trouble. He was partying and drinking, even though he knew what it does to Jill. His constant whining really got on my nerves and made it even more painful for me to get through the boring passages.

On the bright side, I really fell in love with Mead’s narrative voice. She definitely knows how to write and if only there was more action and less (pointless) drama, this book would go straight to my top-favorite shelf. Perhaps if I’ve read the VA series before reaching for Bloodlines, I would enjoy this spin-off more. It surely is a character-driven story and I imagine that the Vampire Academy fans will have fun reading about their favorite characters again. I however, didn’t feel the magic here. To me these people were strangers and, to be perfectly honest, I didn’t like them very much.

While most of the book was rather slow-paced and, well, boring, the ending came as a total surprise. I loved it.  It was everything I hoped for when I picked up this book. Intense, emotional, thrilling, the last 50 pages of Bloodlines were very rewarding and satisfying. For this fantastic ending alone I am giving this book 3/5 starts, instead of 2/5, which officially makes it “an ok read, but nothing mind-blowing” according to my rating system.

The bottom line is: If you read and loved the Vampire Academy books, by all means go get yourself a copy of Bloodlines, you will most likely love it. There are plenty of small references to the VA series throughout the book, plus, like I said before, you will probably enjoy meeting all the VA characters again. If you’re new to Richelle Mead’s vampire world, well, this is not the book to start with. Don’t make the same mistake I did, start with the Vampire Academy.
